Curriculum – Art & Design

[cycloneslider id=”art-and-design”]

Intent

At Kirk Merrington we strive to inspire our pupils, equipping them with the confidence and skills to experiment and invent their own works of art. We believe it is important to develop children’s emotional expression through art to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development. Our art and design curriculum provides a carefully structured sequence of learning to ensure progression in knowledge and skills as children move throughout our school.  Our art and design curriculum is designed to give pupils the opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talents and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history.

Implementation

Our Art scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout.  These strands are:

  • Generating ideas
  • Using sketchbooks
  • Makings skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating and analysing

Through our scheme of work, these strands are revisited each year.  Children build their skills and knowledge, applying them in a range of outcomes.  The formal elements are woven throughout units and key skills are revisited continuously with increasing complexity.  The learning from these units is then applied in further units taught each year.  This allows pupils to revisit, revise and build on previous learning.  Our art and design curriculum ensures that creativity and independent outcomes are embedded into our lessons, supporting students in learning how to make their own creative choices and decisions, so that their art outcomes are unique and individual to the pupil.  Children are encouraged to develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through the opportunity to ask questions and discuss different works of art.  Our art lessons encourage experimental and exploratory learning and pupils in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 use sketchbooks to document their ideas and record their observations.

Impact

As children progress through the Art curriculum at Kirk Merrington Primary School they will:

  • Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
  • Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluation and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
  • Know about artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
  • Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the national curriculum for Art and design.
