Intent
At Kirk Merrington Primary School, we aim to produce 21st Century Citizens who are open-minded and keen to be part of the global community. Our School Drivers encourage and foster a sense of adventure and learning a foreign language is a key part of this. It gives children the opportunity to develop a curiosity about the wider world and an awareness of different cultures.
Implementation
Children begin to learn French in Year 3 and follow a carefully-planned curriculum across Key Stage 2. Throughout the French curriculum, children not only develop language skills but explore the French-speaking world in more detail and think creatively about a wide range of topics. Their ability to use French independently, using appropriate language and vocabulary, is encouraged through a progressive curriculum, with tasks and activities carefully planned to develop their confidence and resilience. Topics are covered in depth and revisited throughout Keystage 2 to ensure knowledge is secure.
Impact
The impact of learning a modern language can be measured not only in the ability to recognise and use key vocabulary and sentence structures, but in the enthusiasm and willingness to try new things. Children become independent, resilient learners who can think creatively and develop a love of language which is so enriching.
